Path for Health, in partnership with Plan International Uganda, is proud to announce its participation in the Girls Get Equal campaign, aimed at challenging and transforming the status quo that perpetuates discrimination against girls and young women in Uganda.
Despite notable progress in recent years toward girls and women’s rights, gender equality remains an elusive goal. Girls and young women in Uganda continue to face various forms of discrimination, hindering their freedom and limiting their ability to thrive in their communities.
Through the Girls Get Equal campaign, Plan International Uganda, alongside Path for Health, will champion the rights of girls and young women, recognizing them as crucial stakeholders in the country’s development. The campaign’s objective is to empower every girl, giving her agency over her own life and enabling her to shape the world around her.
A key focus of the campaign is ensuring that girls and young women are equally valued in Ugandan society. They should have the freedom to actively participate and lead in decision-making processes that impact their lives. They should be able to live and express themselves without fear of violence or harassment. Furthermore, harmful stereotypes enforced by artists, storytellers, educators, and advertisers will be challenged, with a collective effort to create and share diverse stories that showcase girls’ power.
Plan International Uganda, with its wide reach and extensive programming, will integrate the Girls Get Equal campaign into its activities and advocacy efforts. The campaign will follow a three-phased approach:
- Building support within communities: By raising awareness and engaging communities, support for girls’ rights and gender equality will be fostered, promoting a more inclusive and supportive environment.
- Strengthening partnerships and finding allies: Plan International Uganda will collaborate with like-minded organizations and individuals to amplify the campaign’s impact and create a powerful network of advocates for girls’ rights.
- Influencing decision-makers: Through strategic advocacy and engagement, decision-makers and processes related to girls’ rights will be influenced to drive meaningful change and secure a brighter future for girls and young women in Uganda.
The Girls Get Equal campaign has already been launched in eight areas across Uganda, including Kamuli, Tororo, Lira, Adjumani, Yumbe, Arua, Nebbi, and Kampala. Path for Health and Plan International Uganda are committed to working together to dismantle barriers, empower girls, and create a society where every girl is truly equal and can fulfill her potential.
