Reproductive Health Uganda and Path For Health Uganda Partner to Accelerate Adolescent Health Improvement Project

Path 4 Health and RHU MOU Partnership

Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU) and Path For Health Uganda (P4H) are pleased to announce their partnership to implement the Concept Note for Accelerating Adolescent Health Improvement Project (AHIP). This collaboration aims to improve access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH), gender-based violence (GBV), and HIV-related information and services for young people in Luwero District, Uganda.

With over 1.2 billion adolescents worldwide facing various health risks and vulnerabilities, RHU and P4H recognize the critical importance of addressing the challenges faced by young people in their transition to adulthood. Uganda’s high teenage pregnancy rate, increased HIV infections among older adolescents, and inadequate knowledge and skills for SRH protection necessitate immediate action to protect and empower adolescents.

The partnership’s overarching goal is to ensure improved access to SRH/GBV/HIV-related information and services for young people, particularly young women and girls aged 10-24 in Luwero District. The project will be guided by the following objectives:

  1. Improve access to integrated SRHR/HIV/GBV information and services for young people in and out of school.
  2. Create avenues for young people to acquire vital skills, make informed choices, and lead healthy lives.
  3. Strengthen community engagement, demand, ownership, and advocacy for SRH services by young people.
  4. Enhance the capacity of the child well-being committee to respond to reproductive health-related rights violations.

The primary target groups of this initiative are young people between the ages of 10-24 in schools and select communities. Additionally, secondary target groups include parents, teachers, health workforce, SGBV response structures, district and education officers, cultural leaders, and religious leaders.

To effectively deliver services and information, P4H will employ a community-based model with peer providers and young people with lived experiences as integral components. This approach ensures that services are accessible to young people in the community, particularly those who are out of school. Integrated outreaches, peer-to-peer approaches, and home visits for young people living with HIV will be implemented to meet their specific needs.

RHU and P4H emphasize the importance of community sensitization, creating awareness, and advocating for SRH among young people, especially adolescent girls, and young women. Through collaboration with health facilities, district authorities, and community leaders, the project aims to strengthen service delivery, behavior changes communication strategies, and the utilization of available services.

Regular monitoring, evaluation, and data collection will be conducted to assess progress and make necessary adjustments to the implementation approach. RHU, Luwero District, and P4H will utilize agreed-upon data tools to generate reports and ensure project accountability.

Key activities of the project include integrated HIV/SRH/GBV service delivery outreaches, peer-led community sensitization, and life skills education, home visits for young people living with HIV, dialogue meetings with community gatekeepers, community sensitization drives, and community scorecard monitoring.

RHU and P4H are committed to safeguarding the health and rights of adolescents in Luwero District, empowering them to make informed choices and thrive. By working together, this partnership aims to accelerate progress in adolescent health and contribute to a brighter future for young people.
